This Week In Doctor Who - November 30, 2005
(posted 30th Nov 2005, 11:18am - TWIDW post #0361)
Just before TWIDW went to press, Sci-Fi Channel's http://www.scifi.com Sci-Fi Wire broke a news story claiming that the US would get Doctor Who Series One as a Direct to DVD release on February 14, 2006. It would be the same contents as the UK boxset and retail at $99.98 (most stores would sell below this price). Sci- Fi Wire claims that this release is being done by BBC Worldwide Americas "in advance of any plans to license Doctor Who for broadcast in the United States". The story is at http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=33462 .
I note that this is the same date as the previously announced (not
announced on Sci-Fi Wire) Canadian release of the Series One boxset.
The original intention had been to release the Series at the same
time in the US and Canada. BBC Worldwide Americas could have gone
back to their old plans. The story hasn't made it to reliable
sources like TVShowsOnDVD http://www.tvshowsondvd.com or Steve
Manfred's Doctor Who DVD & VHS FAQ http://home.comcast.net/~smanfred
at this time, which makes the story suspect. $99.98 is the same
price that HBO has released The Sopranos and Six Feet Under to DVD
at for 13 episode seasons. Be aware that BBC Worldwide Americas has
tried to sell Doctor Who to Bravo, Sci-Fi, and a couple of other
networks - Doctor Who is not on US screens because the networks and
BBC WA disagree on the show's value, not because it is yet to be
offered. The problem is unlikely to be resolved soon.
The truth should be out shortly. If true, then US Doctor Who fans
will have a much easier time getting the new series, though it would
be sad to think that a TV broadcast of the series is indefinitely
delayed. If the story is incorrect, the boxset will still be out in
Canada on February 14. Specialist shops and online stores in Canada
will be selling it, as will regular stores in Canada. And the
Canadian release will play perfectly fine on US DVD players.

Wednesday 30 November:
NRK 2 Norway - 8:05PM - Krigen Forsetter
Friday 2 December:
Jimmy (Italy) - 9PM - Aliens of London
Saturday 3 December:
één Network Belgium - 3:35PM - The End Of The World
France 4 - 10:25PM - Drôle De Mort/Le Docteur Danse
Christmas Day:
BBC One 7PM/BBC Three TBD - The Christmas Invasion
Boxing Day:
CBC Canada 8PM - The Christmas Invasion
Broadcast times for Doctor Who - The Christmas Invasion in the UK
and Canada have been confirmed. BBC One airs The Christmas Invasion
on Christmas Day (25 December) at 7PM. Early schedules indicated it
might start at 6:15PM or 7:15PM - those times were probably correct
at the time they were published - the schedule wasn't finalized
then. It is believed that The Christmas Invasion will not be airing
at the same time as Coronation Street on ITV, but that was still
unclear at publication time. In Canada, The Christmas Invasion will
air on Boxing Day (26 December) in a 90 minute slot from 8 to 9:30PM
in all time zones as previously expected (8:30PM Newfoundland). At
this time it looks like these will be the only broadcasters to get
The Christmas Invasion this Christmas. No doubt the BFBS service
will offer The Christmas Invasion to British soldiers soon
afterwards.
BBC Three http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree will also have Doctor Who
material on Christmas Day. I suspect it will be a repeat of The
Christmas Invasion, but we won't know for certain till BBC Three's
Christmas schedule comes out. It will probably become clear in the
Christmas edition of the Radio Times http://www.radiotimes.com
magazine, coming out in the next few days in the UK with a Doctor
Who Christmas theme cover.
I would like to issue an apology to KTEH/KCAH in San Jose/Watsonville, CA http://www.kteh.org . KTEH has aired sporadic Doctor Who related specials even after losing the series in 2003. To celebrate the show's 42nd anniversary, KTEH scheduled the documentary Mythmakers: William Hartnell to air at 7PM on November 23. And they did notify me in advance. With all the other things going on, I did not remember to put it in the column, only realizing the error after the special had aired. My apologies to Doctor Who fans in the KTEH/KCAH area who were unaware of this broadcast, and to Ken Patterson at KTEH. Hopefully most of the Who fans in the area caught the broadcast anyway.
The Children In Need Doctor Who segment (Billie Piper, David Tennant, and the console room) remained online until 9:30PM GMT on Friday 25 November. It is unknown when/if it will air on television again. No plans for including it on a DVD release have been announced, but I would be surprised if it wasn't in the Series 2 set.
BBC7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 will start airing more new to radio
Doctor Who next Saturday 10 December, in case you'd forgotten.
10 December 9AM to Noon, 8 to 11PM, 3 to 6AM - Shada, the 2003 remake of the Douglas Adams story. Produced by Big Finish for BBCi.
Starring Paul McGann as the Doctor, Lalla Ward as Romana, and John Leeson as K9. The Shada broadcast will have interviews and a look back at the making of the original unfinished story. A trailer for Shada is up at http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/sounds/shada.mp3 , highlighting the 8PM broadcast.
10 December 6:30PM & 12:30AM GMT - "The Chimes Of Midnight".
Originally released in 2002, this is the 6th Big Finish CD release
starring Paul McGann as the Doctor and India Fisher as Charley. It
looks like it'll be serialized over the next few weeks. It is the
next one in the series after "Invaders In Mars", which recently
aired on BBC7. It is also set around Christmastime.
Één Network http://www.een.be in Belgium and the Netherlands seems to be using Doctor Who as filler. Last week it premiered at 3:55PM CET. This week it will air at 3:35PM. If you are watching or taping this broadcast of the series (English with subtitles), you will need to check each week for the start time.
France 4 http://www.france4.tv has put up the tentative broadcast schedule for the rest of Doctor Who series 1 on their channel. Interestingly, all the episodes except the last (Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways) have French episode titles on the website. I wonder if this is just an oversight, or deliberate (ex: the French title being a spoiler)? At 2 episodes a week French viewers will know soon - the last episode airs between 17 and 24 December.
BBC Kids http://www.bbckids.ca is getting a bit of attention for their upcoming Doctor Who schedule. The Curse of Fenric, originally announced in their press release as airing late Saturday 17 December at 2AM EST, now is missing from the schedule. Survival has moved to the 17th, with the weekend rotation returning to Pertwee stories on 18 December. Hopefully this is just an error and The Curse of Fenric will air. But as of press time, Fenric was missing.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
